Atelier PALL

Atelier PALL was founded in 1955 by Anton Pal. They manufacture small premium quality leather items including wallets, iPhone cases, key rings belts etc.

We love their quality and design and have featured three of their wallets on minimalwallet.net already. We contacted them recently for information about their design / manufacture process.

Q. Briefly tell us about Atelier PALL who you are and how you got started?

A. Atelier PALL is at it’s third generation of craftsmen, taking traditional leather working into the realm of Internet, laser machines and vector patterns while trying to keep  the beeswax and wooden stitching horse in the center of it’s dynamics. With a solid local history in shoe-making, the small leather goods department is built on a steady foundation as it was launched a couple of years ago. It was initiated as a natural answer to basic needs for ourselves and it quietly developed over time preserving the essential needs and nothing more. A couple of years ago we decided to launch the first mini-collection and feedback was encouraging enough for us to pursue this project.

Q. What made you decide to make wallets, card holders etc?

A. Wallets and such make a great buying experience. You round up your needs and you look for it. I was always fascinated with my new wallet for a couple of days after buying it. But over time we have learned that machine sewn wallets and thin leather and canvas and glue don’t really go a long way together. Having the Atelier (workshop) gave us the opportunity to start experimenting. Needless to say we considered the prototypes good enough and realized we needed less than we thought. This was when we put the “minimal” into our wallets.

Q. Are you looking to add any other designs? What’s the future hold for Atelier PALL?

A. Yes, we are about to launch a couple of designs next month and we are very excited about them. They are improved designs based on current items. Each concept takes a couple of steps – it commences with a need/function. That usually dictates the design and structure while trying to maintain the aesthetics of our branding. Various patterns and materials are built. We always take “the new one” for a drive test – a couple of weeks. If it’s good enough for us I hope it’ll be for customers too. So I guess we don’t have a constant item, as we always try out our prototypes. I hope the future brings high end materials to our collection and thoughtful designs that will rise up to the demands of a modern and dynamic world. Definitely minimal wallets will become our priority.

Q. Which famous person would you love to get an order from for one of your wallets? and why?

A. Unfortunately he’s not around anymore, and it may sound somewhat of a cliche, but I would have to say Mr. Jobs. I chose him both for being a controversial  person in a good  way and for being a rebel mind that has inspired an entire world. But most of all we love that he made things simple and useful for the end user even if that was only possible due to a huge amount of work and innovation and failure and passion which no one cared about. I think he would carry around a minimal Atelier PALL wallet in his jeans pocket, in his rebel years of youth, in a parallel universe…

Elvis & Kresse

Elvis & Kresse design and make products out of reclaimed fire hoses. Minimal Wallet caught up with them recently to find out more about them.

Q. Briefly tell us about Elvis & Kresse who you are and how you got started?

A. Fire hose was the first material we found when Kresse moved to the UK.  In 2005 we had a chance meeting with the London Fire Brigade and learned about their hose problem. We fell in love with the stunning, life saving material and began collecting it immediately. We made two promises to the London Fire Brigade, that we would help, and that we would donate 50% of the profits to the Fire Fighters Charity. Having kept those promises is the highlight of our design careers so far.

Q. What made you decide to make wallets, card holders etc out of fire-hoses?

A. Our primary goal was to create a long-term, sustainable solution for the London hoses. The business decisions we make, including the choice of luxury accessories, have been about solving the hose problem in the best, most inspiring way. There aren’t enough hoses for us to make roof tiles, there is too much work involved to make low value items, and there is no point rescuing this incredibly durable, history rich material, unless we are going to honour it with the best possible designs and craftsmanship. By 2010 we had solved the problem for London and now collect across the UK.

Q. Are you looking to add any other designs? What’s the future hold for Elvis & Kresse?

A. We are introducing new pieces all the time – we have a mini-messenger and a small compact case that will both be out by the end of March. Equally we are always taking on new materials. Although we started with the hose we now regularly reclaim over 10 other materials, always with the same goal, to create a complete solution for that material and to give 50% of the profits from that range to a related charity.

Q. Which famous person would you love to get an order from for one of your wallets? and why?

A. We have a number of heroes, leaders, it would be incredible to see them wearing our accessories; Aung San Suu Kyi, Ellen MacArthur, Al Gore, Bunker Roy, Muhammad Yunus, Usain Bolt, Sir Ranulf Fiennes, Wayne Gretzky (Kresse is Canadian), James Dyson, Stephen Hawking, Bradley Wiggins, Vivienne Westwood, Joni Mitchell, David Beckham, Jamie Oliver, Oprah Winfrey…

Fielder’s Choice

Fielder’s Choice make wallets from recycled vintage baseball gloves. Their Glove Wallet was featured recently here on minimalwallet.net.

Q. Briefly tell us about Fielder’s Choice who you are and how you got started?

A. Fielder’s Choice Goods is a American made accessory brand that focuses on re-purposing vintage American baseball glove leather in to classic goods. The idea of the brand grew organically, i was looking to start a small unique product line which slowly built steam in to having an influence on Baseball, genuine American heritage with fashionable accessories.

Q. What made you decide to make wallets out of old baseball gloves?

A. The uniqueness of how the leather has been broken in and aged. Everybody has different way to break in a glove, and with the random layout of our wallet templates you can create a look unlike any other.

Q. Are you looking to add any other designs? What’s the future hold for Fielder’s Choice ?

A. Yes, We have a few other products in the works that we will be debuting on Opening Day. We also carry caps from Ebbets Field Flannels, that feature our vintage glove leather.

Q. Which famous person would you love to get an order from for one of your wallets? and why?

A. To see a Ballplayer influence a kid to buy the glove with his signature on it, use it through his childhood, have it left for dead in a barn or a garage and have it repurchased, clean up and re-purposed in to a wallet and then hadn’t back to that now retired player would be pretty cool. We have worked with current Hall of Famers so the idea of a wallet possibly coming full circle, would be the ultimate goal.

KC CO.

KC CO. are from Kansas City and their Simple Wallet was featured recently here on minimalwallet.net.  For our ‘meet the maker‘ series we contacted KC CO. to find out a bit more about them & their products.

Q. Briefly tell us about KC CO who you are and how you got started?

A. KC CO. is a company focused on making the highest quality goods we can make. We aim to make beautiful things of heirloom quality. Things people care about.

KC CO. was founded by Dominic Scalise and Austin Lyon. We both have many passions, including music, quality, and the outdoors.

We both have always enjoyed working with our hands, so leatherwork came pretty naturally. Austin picked it up first and started making some incredible things. He gave me some sage advice on how to get started, and I gave it a shot. After a while, we started working together on projects, and we were off to the races.

Q. What made you decide to make wallets?

A. We aim to make essentials, not superfluous things. Everyone needs a wallet. We felt we should take a stab at it. It had to be thin, clean, and able to stand the test of time. We were so excited when we came up with the simple wallet.

Q. Are you looking to add any other designs? What’s the future hold for KC CO?

A. Absolutely. We are constantly working on new products and will be adding many this year. I can’t see any additional wallets in the near future, as the Simple Wallet covers what we want out of a product. It’s clean, simple, sturdy, and doesn’t allow people too carry too much. It’s pretty easy to clear out the clutter when you’re forced to. We look forward to growing the company, adding more people, and adding bigger projects to the mix.

Q. Which famous person would you love to get an order from for one of your wallets? and why?

A. John Mayer. Not only is he a guitar god, he’s also an avid watch collector (watch people are all about the details). He clearly appreciates quality and the time and work that goes into something.
